This guide will show you how to set up a basic paper weave with scrap paper, that can be put in a frame as artwork or for decorations on cards and boxes. It will also show you how to use this medium as a means of experimentation or expression to create unique artwork.

Difficulty level: Beginners

Instructions:

Materials:
Scrap paper, junk mail, old magazines
Scissors
Paper glue
Ruler
Pen or pencil

Fold you base paper in half.

Make dots at equal distances from each other along the top and along the bottom.

Cut slits from the folded edge, stopping before you get to the end. You do not want to cut all the way.

Use the same measurement to cut strips from your junk mail or scrap paper for the weaving.

Take 1 strip and insert it over the edge and under the second strip.

Continue to insert it under alternate strips.
Push the strip up to the top.

Insert another strip under the edge and over the second base strip.

Continue to insert it under and over alternate base strips.
Push it up to the top.

Repeat steps 2 to 5 until you cannot fit any more strips.

Cut the strips that end in front along the edge.
Glue their ends in place.

Flip the paper over to the back and repeat.

Result

Instead of using 1 color strip to weave you can alternate with an another for the results shown in the picture.

For this result the first strip started under the first 2 base strips and over the third base strip.

These are just 3 examples.
You can get many different results with different combinations of colors and starting points of the weaving.

You can fold your paper and cut strips from the folded end any width you like.
They do not have to be measured or equal.

Instead of cutting straight strips for weaving, you can cut wiggly lines.

Weave the wiggly strips as you would the straight strips. You can start anywhere and add more strips or pieces of paper to the design.
They can be sticking out beyond the paper. You can do anything you come up with .

To decorate, create or express yourself, you can follow the rules or break the rules. The sky is the limit!
