This beginner’s guide about how to draw a three dimensional box is a good way to try out perspective drawing. It is an easy introduction to the horizon line, vanishing point, orthogonal lines and transversal lines.

Difficulty level: Beginners

Instructions:

You will need:
Paper
Pencil
Eraser
Ruler
Optional: colored pencil, markers or paint

*All the lines drawn in this guide represent lines made in pencil. The colored lines shown are just to make it easier to see what is done in each step.

Draw a horizontal line about 1/3 down from the top of the paper

*This horizontal line is called the horizon

Make a dot at the center of the horizontal line
*This dot is called the vanishing point

Draw a rectangle on the left lower side of the paper.

Draw lines from the corners of the rectangle to the vanishing point

*These lines are called orthogonal lines.
All lines leading from the rectangle to the vanishing point are called orthogonal lines

The placement of the next line effects how wide you want your box will be. The closer to the rectangle they are the thinner the box.

Make a vertical line connecting the 2 lines coming from the right top and bottom of the rectangle, as shown in yellow.

*This line is called a transversal line.

Find the lines coming from the top of the rectangle.
Connect them with a horizontal line (shown in yellow) that starts at the top of the last line you made.

*This line is also a transversal line.

Find the lines coming from the left side of the rectangle.
Connect them with a vertical line that starts at the end of the last line you made. Shown in yellow

*This line is also a transversal line.

Connect the two vertical lines with a horizontal line as shown in yellow.

*This line is also a transversal line.

All the drawing part is done.

*the diagonal lines going to the vanishing point are called orthogonal lines, shown in blue and green

* The brown lines are called transversal lines and used to establish the height and width between orthogonal lines.
