If your site is not on the first few pages of the search engine results is almost as if it does not exists.
There are several things you can do to promote your website.

Make sure you have quality content. It must be well written, unique and include keywords.

Have a good reason for other sites to link to your site.
It must be a logical reason that they would link to you.
It is better to have no links than to have links that are not logical because you will be penalized.

Make sure that the TITLE TAG of your site (the site name that appears in the browser) contains targeted keywords, but do not overdo it.

Make sure that the company that builds you site is SEO savvy

Sites built with flash may be interesting and beautiful but will not be noticed by Google. Google only recognizes text.

Constantly add quality text to your site. It will help your ratings.

Search engines identify flooding of keywords. It will make you raking lower.

Quality is more important than quantity, when it comes to links to your site.

Give names to the links within your site. Don't leave a name like "Click here".
Include keywords in the name such as "ucandostuff SEO tutorial"

Add text descriptions to the pictures and videos. Google will pay attention to the text.

If you are the owner or CEO, start promoting yourself online - Write blogs, articles and opinions.
The more well known you become, the more you rank goes up.

Tips

It is important that the site be active, has new content, comments, people, blogs, articles, etc. These things move the site forward.
