How to Cook Perfect Rice Every Time: A Simple Guide
Learn the water ratio, cooking times, and essential steps for fluffy rice.
What You'll Need
- 1 cup (200g) long-grain white rice
- 2 cups (475ml) cold water
- ½ teaspoon salt (optional)
- 1 tablespoon butter or oil (optional)
- Medium saucepan with tight-fitting lid
- Fine-mesh sieve or colander
This method works for long-grain white rice (Basmati or Jasmine). Use 1 cup rice to 2 cups water. Rinsing removes excess starch to prevent clumping.
Rinse the Rice
Place rice in a fine-mesh sieve. Rinse under cold running water, swishing with your hand, until water runs clear (about 30 seconds). Drain well.
Combine Ingredients
Transfer rinsed rice to the saucepan. Add 2 cups cold water. Add salt and butter/oil if using. Stir once.
Bring to a Boil
Place saucepan uncovered over medium-high heat. Bring to a rolling boil (bubbles break surface vigorously).
Simmer and Cover
Reduce heat to low, cover with tight-fitting lid, and simmer for 15 minutes. Do not lift the lid during cooking.
Rest and Fluff
Remove from heat. Keep covered and let rest for 5 minutes. Uncover, fluff with a fork, and serve.
Adjusting for Other Rice Types
Brown rice needs more water (about 2.5 cups per cup) and longer cooking (40-45 minutes). Short-grain rice may need slightly less water. Always check package instructions.
Don't Lift the Lid
Lifting the lid during simmering releases steam and disrupts cooking, leading to uneven texture.
