How to Turn a Fridge Photo into a Weekly Meal Plan and Grocery List (AI Assistant Workflow)
Photograph your fridge, freezer, and pantry, then use a generic AI assistant to draft a multi-day meal plan and aisle-grouped grocery list. You check dates, edit the plan, shop, and cook.
What You'll Need
- Phone camera (fridge, freezer, and pantry photos)
- Generic AI assistant chat that accepts images or pasted lists
- Paper or notes app (edited grocery list)
- Optional: kitchen timer
- Optional: sheet pan (batch prep)
- Phone or computer browser for the AI assistant chat
Any AI assistant chat that accepts images or pasted lists works. Free tier is usually enough. You verify food dates and allergies yourself.
You photograph what is already in the fridge, freezer, and pantry. A generic AI assistant turns that inventory into a multi-day dinner plan and one grocery list. You still check use-by dates, edit the plan, shop, and cook. The assistant is a planning tool, not a clinician, and it does not give medical or allergy advice beyond the restrictions you type in.
Inventory the kitchen
Open the fridge, freezer, and one pantry shelf. Take clear phone photos. Move items so back rows show. Optionally jot a text list of near-expiry items and hard cannot-eat restrictions (allergies, no cilantro, and so on). Check use-by dates yourself. Do not trust the assistant for food safety.
Seed the plan with a constraint prompt
In any vision-capable AI assistant chat, attach 1 to 3 photos, or paste your list. Use a prompt like this: Plan 5 or 7 days of dinners for [household size]. Use ONLY what is visible in the photos/list, plus at most 3 cheap store additions. Restrictions: [list]. Max cook time: 30 minutes on weeknights. Prioritize items nearest expiry. For each night give: dish name, ingredients used, rough time, one-sentence method, and why this night. Flag anything you cannot identify. Do not guess.
Revise until it fits real life
Ask for swaps when a night does not fit, for example kid-friendlier, one-pan, or no oven on Tuesday. Force ingredient reuse across 2 to 3 meals and a leftovers plan (which dinners become next-day lunches). Reject any 15-minute claim that is clearly a long braise. Verify cook times yourself.
Convert to a grocery list and prune
Prompt: Turn this plan into one grocery list grouped by store section (produce / dairy / protein / pantry / frozen). Omit staples I already have: [oil, salt, rice…]. Copy the list into paper or a notes app. Cross off anything already in the house. Substitute for what your store actually carries.
Execute and close the loop
Shop from the edited list. Cook Night 1. After the week, paste what you actually ate and ask for a reusable prompt tuned to repeat these dinners, drop these. Optional Sunday prep ask: What can I chop or batch on Sunday for this plan? Use a timer and a sheet pan if you batch prep.
Keep the edited prompt for next week. Allergy and medical needs stay on you: human verification and professional advice when needed. The assistant only plans from what you show it and the restrictions you type.
