How to Declutter One Closet or Drawers with an AI Decision Tree (Keep / Donate / Trash / Relocate)

Clear one closet, junk drawer, or shelf with a timed plan and a Keep / Donate / Trash / Relocate decision tree from a generic AI assistant. You stage the room, decide, and put things away with containers you already own.

What You'll Need

  • Four boxes or bags + marker (Keep / Donate / Trash / Relocate labels)
  • Optional: phone camera (before photo for the prompt)
  • Generic AI assistant chat (text is enough; photo optional)
  • Timer
  • Existing containers only (shoeboxes, jars, baskets already in the house)
  • Phone or computer browser for the AI assistant chat

Any AI assistant chat works. Text is enough; a before photo is optional. Free tier is usually enough. Do not shop for new bins for this session unless you decide to later.

You pick one closet, junk drawer, or pantry shelf — not the whole house. A generic AI assistant gives you a time-fit plan and Keep / Donate / Trash / Relocate questions for each item. You still pull things out, decide, bag what leaves, and put Keep items back with containers you already own. The assistant is a planning tool. It does not tidy the room for you.

1

Pick one space and set constraints

Choose a single closet, junk drawer, or pantry shelf. Do not start the whole house. Photograph it if you want. Note your available time (for example 90 minutes Saturday), who shares the space (kids?), and what done looks like (hanging clothes visible; floor clear).

2

Generate a time-fit plan and decision tree

In any AI assistant chat, paste a prompt like this: I want to declutter my [bedroom closet / junk drawer]. Contents roughly: [brief list]. I have [X hours/minutes]. Give a step-by-step plan that fits that time. Include a decision tree for each item: Keep / Donate / Trash / Relocate — with 3 yes/no questions per item (Do I use it in 90 days? Would I buy it again today? Does it fit this space's job?). Do not suggest shopping for new bins unless I ask. End with a 5-minute nightly reset for this space. Attach a before photo only if it helps; text is enough.

3

Stage the room

Set out four labeled boxes or bags: Keep, Donate, Trash, Relocate. Work top to bottom or left to right so you finish a zone before starting another. Use the decision questions aloud or on paper. Park Unsure items in a fifth box capped at 10 items, then force decisions at the end of the session. Start the timer so the plan stays inside your block.

4

Contain with what you own

Group Keep items by how you use them, not by material. Reuse shoeboxes, jars, and baskets already in the house. Measure before any future purchase. This guide stops at use what you have — no shopping for new bins unless you ask later.

5

Exit and maintain

Bag Donate for a scheduled drop-off. Take trash out the same day. Move Relocate items to their true homes before you stop. Save the chat. For the next session ask: I finished [zone]. Left: [list]. Plan the next 60 minutes. Run the 5-minute evening reset for one week.

Keep the saved chat for the next zone. One finished space beats a half-cleared house. The assistant only plans; you make every Keep / Donate / Trash / Relocate call.
