How to Knit Tube Ropes with a Toilet Paper Roll Loom
Make a simple loom from a toilet paper roll and knit a tube rope with yarn. A quick DIY project for kids and beginners.
What You'll Need
- Empty toilet paper roll
- Yarn (medium weight recommended)
- Scissors
- Craft glue or tape (optional, for reinforcement)
- Your fingers (or a small crochet hook/knitting needle if preferred)
Use an empty toilet paper roll as a loom to knit a tube rope. This project is simple and works with any yarn, though medium weight is easier for beginners.
Prepare the Loom
Cut small, evenly spaced notches around one end of the toilet paper roll. Each notch should be about 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) deep. Space them evenly around the circumference.
Cast On
Thread the yarn through the center of the roll so it comes out the bottom (the end without notches). Leave a tail of 6-8 inches. Then, wrap the yarn around each prong (the sections between notches) to create a loop on each prong.
Knit the First Round
Bring the working yarn around the outside of all prongs, above the loops. Then, lift the bottom loop over the top loop and off each prong, one by one. This completes one round.
Continue Knitting
Repeat the process: wrap the yarn around the outside of all prongs, then lift the bottom loop over the top and off each prong. Continue until the tube reaches your desired length.
Bind Off
Cut the yarn, leaving a tail. Thread the tail through each loop on the prongs, then slide the loops off the loom. Pull the tail tight to close the end, and weave in the loose ends.
Tension
Keep consistent tension. Too loose makes a floppy tube; too tight makes it hard to lift loops. Aim for a comfortable, even pull.
Sharp Edges
The cut notches may have sharp edges. Smooth them with scissors or cover with tape if needed.
