DIY Jacob's Ladder Toy: Make an Optical Illusion from Toilet Paper Rolls
Build a classic Jacob's Ladder toy using recycled toilet paper rolls. This project creates a fascinating optical illusion and is suitable for kids.
What You'll Need
- 6-8 empty toilet paper rolls
- 2 pieces of ribbon or string, each 1 yard (3 feet) long
- Glue or tape
- Optional: markers, paint, or stickers for decoration
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Pencil
This toy uses cardboard segments and ribbons to create a cascading optical illusion. You will need about 30 minutes.
Prepare the Cardboard Rolls
Flatten each empty toilet paper roll. Using a ruler and pencil, mark and cut each flattened roll into 4-5 inch sections.
Cut the Cardboard Segments
From each 4-5 inch flattened section, cut lengthwise to create individual rungs. Each rung should be about 1.5 inches wide. You will need 6-8 rungs total.
Decorate the Segments
Optional: Decorate each cardboard segment with markers, paint, or stickers. This makes the toy more visually interesting.
Assemble the Ladder
Cut two pieces of ribbon or string, each 1 yard long. Lay the decorated segments in a row, face down. Place one ribbon vertically across the center of all segments. Apply glue or tape to the first segment, then place the second ribbon on top, sandwiching the ribbon between the first and second segments. Repeat for each segment, alternating the ribbon position (top and bottom) to create the ladder effect.
Test the Toy
After the glue or tape dries, hold the top segment and tilt it slightly. The segments should cascade down, creating the illusion. If they don't, check that the ribbons are attached securely and evenly.
Tip
Use strong glue or double-sided tape for a more durable toy. Ensure the ribbons are not twisted.

Small parts may be a choking hazard for children under 3. Adult supervision is recommended.
