How to make a Thanksgiving pilgrim’s hat for a wine bottle

Steps

   Materials: Black or dark colored paper for the hat Brown paper for the hatband Dark brown, silver or gold paper for the buckle Scissors Round object – 1 ½ inch diameter – a bottle cap from orange juice was used for this guide Optional: colors and white or skin colored paper for the face

   Trace the outline of a glass on black paper and cut it out. Trace it again on white or skin colored paper if you want to make the face. Cut a 5 ¾ X 2 inch strip of black paper

   Make a ½ inch fold on a long edge of the 5 ¾ X 2 inch black paper.

   Unfold and make slits up to the crease.

   Make a ½ inch fold on the opposite edge.

   Find a 1 ½ inch diameter round object (or draw one with a compass and cut it out) *A bottle cap from an orange juice bottle was used in this demonstration.

   Place the cap in the center of the black circle. Trace the circle and cut it out. *You can stab a hole in the center for an entrance point for you scissors.

    Roll up the paper with the slits and slide it through the circle you just cut out. Let the rolled paper expand inside the hole and bring it down until the slits. Straighten the top edge and glue it together. Put glue on the outside of the slits and press them to the bottom side of the black circle.

    Cut a strip of paper 5 ½ X ½ inches for the band

    Cut a square paper slightly larger than the strip. This will be the buckle.

    Fold the square paper in half. Draw a rectangle on the folded edge and cut it out.

    Wrap the paper strip for the band around the hat. It should be just loose enough to slide off. Glue the overlapping edge of the band. *Put glue only on the band.

    Slide the band off of the hat and glue the buckle to it.

    Slide the band back on the hat. You can put a little glue to hold it in place. You pilgrim’s hat is finished and ready to slide onto the neck of the wine bottle.

    If you want to make a face to put under the hat, fold the white or skin colored circle in half.

    Cut it in half along the crease. Draw a face at the center of the bottom 1/3 of the half circle.

    Put glue on the ends of the straight edge of the half circle and wrap them onto the bottle, underneath the hat. Happy Thanksgiving!
