How to Make a Candle Fan Napkin Fold
Fold a cloth napkin into a fan shape and place it in a wine glass for table settings.
What You'll Need
- 1 cloth napkin, 18–20 inches square, medium stiffness
- Iron (optional)
- Light starch spray (optional)
This fold turns a square cloth napkin into an accordion fan that stands in a wine glass. Use it for dinners or holidays.
Step 1: Prepare the Napkin
Lay the napkin flat on a clean surface. Fold it in half to form a rectangle. Fold in half again to make a square. Unfold to the rectangle shape.
Step 2: Make the Base Fold
With the napkin as a rectangle, fold the top edge down to meet the bottom edge, creating a long narrow strip. Press the crease firmly.
Step 3: Create Accordion Pleats
Starting at one short end, fold the strip back and forth in 1-inch sections, like a fan. Continue until you have about 2 inches left unfolded at the other end.
Step 4: Secure the Base
Take the unfolded 2-inch section. Fold it diagonally over the pleats to form a triangle base. Tuck the triangle under the pleats to hold them together.
Step 5: Place in Glass
Hold the pleated fan upright. Insert the base into a wine glass. Gently spread the pleats apart to form a full fan shape.
Tips
Iron the napkin before folding for crisp lines. If the napkin is too soft, spray with light starch and iron. Adjust pleat width for a larger or smaller fan.
