How to Make a Trip Packing List with an AI Assistant (Prompt, Edit, Verify, Pack)
Collect trip facts, prompt a generic AI assistant for a categorized packing list with quantities, edit and verify high-stakes items yourself, then pack and save a reusable master template.
What You'll Need
- Tape measure (bag dimensions)
- Your airline's baggage page (you check size and weight yourself)
- Generic AI assistant chat (text is enough; free tier is usually enough)
- Weather forecast source
- Printed list or notes app with checkboxes
- Optional: packing cubes or zip bags you already own
- Phone or computer browser for the AI assistant chat
Any AI assistant chat works. Free tier is usually enough. Do not treat the assistant as an authority on visas, vaccinations, or medication rules. Check those with official sources.
You write down the trip facts first. A generic AI assistant drafts a categorized packing list with quantities and Essential / Conditional / Optional labels. You still check the forecast, airline bag rules, meds, and documents yourself. The assistant drafts; you verify and pack. Related home workflows on the site cover fridge meal planning and one-space declutter with the same kind of assistant chat.
Collect the trip facts
Write destination (city, not just the country), exact dates, number of days, who is going (kids' ages), planned activities and any dress code, laundry access, and your bag limit (carry-on only or checked). Measure the bag you will use. Check your airline's size and weight rule yourself.
Prompt for a structured draft
In any AI assistant chat, paste the facts with a prompt like this: Make a packing list for [destination], [start]–[end] ([N] days). Travelers: [who]. Activities: [list, incl. one nice dinner / hike / etc.]. Laundry: [yes/no]. Bag limit: [carry-on only, 55×40×20 cm]. Group by clothes, toiletries, tech, documents, kids, and activity gear. Give a number next to every item and label each Essential / Conditional / Optional. Add a separate VERIFY section for anything that depends on current info (weather, plug type, entry rules). Do not pad quantities. Assume I re-wear.
Edit like an editor
Delete duplicates and anything you would never bring. If the trip is within about 2 weeks, paste the real forecast and ask it to adjust layers. Add by hand what AI under-lists: prescription meds by name, passport or ID plus copies, chargers, adapter, glasses or contacts. Ask: Cut this to fit carry-on only. What goes?
Turn it into a pack-day checklist
Ask for three final sections: Must pack / Only if space / Do before leaving (charge devices, download tickets, empty fridge). Print it or copy it to a notes app with checkboxes.
Pack, fit-test, and save a master template
Lay everything out by category. Tick items off as they go in. Zip the bag. If it does not close, cut from the Optional list. After the trip, tell the assistant what you did not use and what you missed, and ask for a reusable master template for this kind of trip.
Closing tip
Keep the master template for the next similar trip. Visas, vaccinations, and medication rules stay on you: verify with official sources. The assistant only drafts from the facts you give it.
