How to Fold a Napkin into a Tie: Step-by-Step Guide
Fold a square fabric napkin into a tie shape for table settings.
What You'll Need
- Square fabric napkin (cotton or linen, 18–20 inches)
- Iron and ironing board (optional)
- Starch (optional)
- Flat, clean surface
Use a square fabric napkin (cotton or linen, 18–20 inches) to create a tie shape. Ironing and starch are optional but help keep folds crisp.
Step 1: Prepare the Napkin
Lay the napkin flat on a clean surface. Iron it thoroughly to remove wrinkles. Optionally apply starch for extra stiffness.
Step 2: Fold into a Large Triangle
Bring one corner diagonally to the opposite corner. Press the crease firmly to form a neat triangle.
Step 3: Create the Collar Base
Orient the triangle with the longest open edge at the top. Fold the top apex down toward the middle of the base, about 2–3 inches, to form the collar.
Step 4: Fold Down the Sides
Take the left corner and fold it inward toward the center line. Repeat with the right corner, overlapping slightly to form the tie's body.
Step 5: Secure the Knot
Flip the napkin over. Fold the top tip downward to create a small triangle (the knot). Tuck the tip under the folds to hold it in place.
Step 6: Refine and Display
Flip back to the front. Adjust folds, smooth wrinkles, and ensure edges align. Place the napkin tie on a plate or beside cutlery.
Tip
Use a napkin with a subtle pattern to hide creases. For a stiffer tie, use starch spray before ironing.
Warning
Avoid over-folding or pressing too hard on delicate fabrics, as this can leave permanent creases.
