How to Make Origami Lucky Stars
Fold paper strips into lucky stars. Simple steps for beginners.
What You'll Need
- Paper strips, 1/2 inch (1.25 cm) wide and 10 inches (25 cm) long. Use printer paper, construction paper, or origami paper. Thinner paper is easier for beginners.

Origami lucky stars are small folded paper stars. They are often given as gifts or used in jars. Each star takes about 2–5 minutes once you learn the fold.
Step 1: Form a Loose Knot
Lay a paper strip flat. Tie a loose knot near one end, like starting a regular knot but with the paper strip.
Tip
Keep the knot loose so you can adjust it. Do not pull it tight yet.
Step 2: Flatten the Pentagon
Gently pull the ends of the strip to flatten the knot into a neat pentagon. Make all five sides even.
Step 3: Tuck the Short End
Fold the short tail over and tuck it into the pentagon. This secures the base and creates a clean edge.
Step 4: Wrap the Long Strip
Wrap the long strip around each side of the pentagon, following the natural angle of the paper. Keep the wraps snug and flat.
Tip
Maintain consistent tension while wrapping to keep the star even.
Step 5: Tuck the Remaining End
When the strip is almost gone, tuck the remaining end into the folds of the star. Trim if needed.
Step 6: Shape the Star
Pinch each of the five points gently with your fingernails to puff up the star. Work around all sides until the star holds its shape.
