How to Fold a Pumpkin Napkin for Fall Table Settings (Cloth Napkin + Cardboard Ring)

Fold a square cloth napkin through a cardboard or napkin ring into a round pumpkin shape, then add a cinnamon stick or twig stem and an optional place-card tag.

What You'll Need

  • Square cloth napkin (cotton or linen, medium weight)
  • Napkin ring or cardboard tube ring (~1.5–2 in)
  • Short cinnamon stick or clean twig (stem)
  • Optional: leaf or paper plus pen (name tag)
  • Optional: butter knife (to tuck fabric)
  • Scissors (only if you cut a cardboard tube ring)

Use a medium-weight cotton or linen napkin. Paper napkins usually tear when you tuck them into the ring.

A square cloth napkin and a short cardboard ring fold into a round pumpkin for each place setting. You push a cinnamon stick or twig through the center for the stem. A small paper or leaf name tag beside the stem works as a place card if you want one.

1

Prep the ring

Cut a paper-towel or toilet-paper tube into a ring about 1.5 to 2 inches tall. A narrow napkin ring works the same way if you already have one. Soft-iron the napkin first if the creases are extreme. That step is optional.

2

Center and pull

Lay the napkin flat, wrong side up. Set the ring in the exact center. Pull about 1 inch of fabric up through the ring so a small collar forms. That collar will hold the stem later.

3

Tuck the corners

Fold each of the four napkin corners toward the ring. Tuck the tips into the ring so they stay put.

4

Pack and shape

Working around the ring, pleat and tuck the remaining fabric into the ring until the form is tight and round. Fluff the fabric outward into a pumpkin silhouette. If the ring is packed full, the tip of a butter knife helps push fabric in without snagging it.

5

Add the stem and optional place card

Push a short cinnamon stick or clean twig into the center collar as the stem. If you want a place card, write a name on a small paper tag or leaf and slide it in beside the stem.

Repeat for each place. Medium-weight cloth holds the shape better than thin fabric. If the pumpkin loosens, tuck a little more fabric into the ring and reseat the stem.
