This guide shows how to make the basic triangular units used in 3D origami (Golden Venture). Each unit has two pockets and two flaps, allowing them to interlock without glue.
Cut Paper Rectangles
Cut your paper into uniform rectangles. Use a ruler and scissors or a paper cutter. Consistent dimensions are critical for units to fit together. For speed, stack several sheets and cut at once.
Make the Initial Crease
Take one rectangle. Fold it in half lengthwise (hotdog style), press firmly, then unfold. This center crease guides later folds.
Fold Sides to Center
Fold the left and right edges inward to meet the center crease. You now have a pointed triangle shape at one end. Press creases well.
Create the Pockets
Fold the small side triangles (the parts of the original rectangle that stick out) inward over the main triangle. These become the pockets that hold other units.
Fold in Half and Finish
Fold the entire unit in half along the original lengthwise crease. The pockets should be on the outside. Press firmly. Your unit is complete.
Precision Tip
Ensure all folds are sharp and aligned. Sloppy folds cause units to not fit together properly.
Batch Cutting
For maximum consistency, cut multiple sheets at once using a paper cutter. This saves time and ensures uniformity.
