How to make a drawing or composition grid.
A drawing grid is a good aid for realistic drawing. It is used to find the area included in the picture and correct proportions of the objects. This guide will show you how to make a drawing grid from materials you have at home.

Step 1
Materials: Cardboard Paper Ruler Pencil Utility knife Scissors String - 2

Skip steps 3 and 4 if your are making a rectangular shaped picture. - 3

To make a square from a rectangle bring the bottom right edge up to align with the left side of the paper. Make sure the fold starts exactly at the left corner. - 4

Cut along the top edge of the folded layer. Unfold the triangle for the square paper. - 5

Center the paper on top of the cardboard. Trace the outline with a pencil. - 6

Remove the paper and cut out along the outline you just made with the utility knife. - 7

Cut a frame of at lease 1 inch around the opening you just made. - 8

Use your ruler to find and mark the middle of each of the 4 sides. Make a halfway mark between the middle and the end of the opening to divide each side into 1/4 's. - 9

Make a tiny slit on the outside of the fame where the marks are. - 10

Stick a string in a slit on one side and bring it horizontally across and into the slit on the opposite side. Repeat for all the side slits. - 11

Repeat for the vertically slits and your composition grid is ready.
