DIY Hula Skirt from Plastic Bags: Easy Kids' Costume Tutorial
Make a fun, eco-friendly hula skirt from recycled plastic bags for kids' costumes or playtime. Step-by-step guide with materials and safety tips.
What You'll Need
- 20-30 clean, dry plastic grocery bags (various colors optional)
- Elastic band, 1-inch wide, cut to child's waist measurement plus 2-3 inches
- Sharp scissors
- Measuring tape
- Marker (optional, for marking elastic)
This DIY hula skirt uses recycled plastic bags to create a costume for playtime, Halloween, or themed parties.
Prep Tip
Gather all materials in one place before starting. This makes the process smoother, especially with children.
Step 1: Prepare the Plastic Bags
Ensure all bags are clean and dry. Lay each flat, smooth out wrinkles, and cut off the bottom seam and handles to create a large rectangle. Then cut the rectangle into strips about 2 inches wide and 12-18 inches long. For younger kids, pre-cut the strips yourself.
Safety Warning
Always supervise children when using scissors. For younger kids, pre-cut the plastic bag strips yourself to ensure safety.
Step 2: Measure and Prepare the Waistband
Measure the child's waist with the measuring tape. Cut the elastic to that measurement plus 2-3 inches. Overlap the ends by 1 inch and sew or tie them securely to form a loop.
Fit Tip
Test the elastic waistband on the child to ensure it's comfortable – not too tight, but snug enough to stay up.
Step 3: Attach Plastic Strips to the Waistband
Take one plastic strip and fold it in half lengthwise. Place the folded end under the elastic band, then pull the loose ends over the elastic and through the loop. Pull tight to secure. Repeat with all strips, spacing them evenly around the waistband.
Step 4: Trim and Finish
Once all strips are attached, trim the bottom edges to even out the skirt length. Shake the skirt to fluff the strips. Your hula skirt is ready to wear.
