DIY Plastic Bottle Containers: Upcycled Storage
Turn clean plastic bottles into simple storage containers. Cut, smooth, and decorate for desk or shelf organization.
What You'll Need
- Plastic bottles (soda, water, milk jugs)
- Acrylic paint or spray paint
- Fabric scraps, yarn, or decorative tape
- Fine-grit sandpaper or nail file
- Sharp utility knife or strong scissors
- Cutting mat or cardboard
- Safety gloves
- Safety glasses
- Hairdryer (optional for shaping)
Use empty plastic bottles to make free storage containers. Clean, cut, smooth edges, and decorate as needed.
Clean and Dry Bottles
Wash each bottle inside and out with warm soapy water. Rinse well and let dry completely.
Cut to Desired Height
Mark a line around the bottle at your chosen height. Use a utility knife or scissors to cut along the line. For angled containers, mark a slanted line.
Smooth the Edges
Sand the cut edge with fine-grit sandpaper or a nail file until smooth. For extra softness, briefly pass a hairdryer on low heat along the edge, then press with a cloth.
Decorate the Container
Paint the outside with acrylic or spray paint. Let dry. Add fabric, yarn, or tape for texture. Allow all decorations to dry before use.
Custom Sizes
Use small bottles for paper clips, tall bottles for pens, and milk jugs for larger items. Cut at an angle for a pencil holder.

Wear safety gloves and glasses when cutting. Work on a stable surface. Keep sharp tools away from children.
