DIY Plastic Bottle Salt and Pepper Shakers
Turn clean plastic bottles into functional salt and pepper shakers or portable spice containers.
What You'll Need
- Empty, clean plastic bottles (2 per shaker)
- Plastic bottle caps (2 per shaker)
- Sharp craft knife
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Marker
- Sandpaper (fine grit)
- Nail or awl
Repurpose clean plastic bottles into shakers for salt, pepper, or spices. You need two bottle sections and two caps per shaker.
Prepare Bottle Sections
Clean and dry bottles. Measure and mark two sections per shaker: one shorter (bottom) and one taller (top). Cut along marks with a craft knife, then smooth edges with sandpaper.
Create Cap Assembly
Cut a thin strip of plastic from a bottle. Wrap it tightly around the rim of one cap, overlapping several times. Insert the wrapped cap into the second cap, pressing firmly. The tension holds them together without glue.
Make Holes
Use a nail or awl to punch small holes in the top cap. For salt, use fewer holes; for pepper, use more. Space holes evenly.
Assemble Shaker
Fill the shorter bottle section with spice. Place the cap assembly over the opening, then press the taller section over the cap assembly to create a sealed shaker. Test by shaking.
Tip
Use bottles with similar diameters for a snug fit. If holes clog, enlarge slightly with the nail.
Warning
Handle craft knives carefully. Keep away from children. Ensure plastic edges are smooth to avoid cuts.
