Make Conical Paper Beads for Jewelry
Create long tapered paper beads for necklaces, bracelets, and other jewelry using paper strips and basic tools.
What You'll Need
- Paper (magazines, scrapbook paper, cardstock, maps)
- Craft glue or Mod Podge
- Clear sealant or varnish (optional)
- Ruler
- Pencil
- Craft knife or scissors
- Cutting mat (if using craft knife)
- Toothpick, bamboo skewer, or bead roller
- Work surface (protected)
Conical paper beads are made by rolling long triangular paper strips into tapered shapes. Use them in necklaces, bracelets, or earrings.
Cut Paper Strips
Cut long triangular strips. The length and width determine bead size. For a long bead, cut a strip about 12 inches long, tapering from 1 inch wide at one end to 1/4 inch at the other.
Apply Adhesive
Place the strip face-down. Apply a thin, even layer of glue or Mod Podge to the back side, especially near the wider end.
Start Rolling
Place the wider end against the toothpick or skewer. Roll tightly, keeping the paper taut and centered. Start at the wide end.
Continue Rolling and Shape
Keep rolling, letting the strip taper naturally. Keep the paper aligned to form a smooth cone. Roll to the narrow tip.
Secure and Finish
Apply a small amount of glue to the tip and press to seal. Slide the bead off the tool. Optionally, coat with sealant or varnish and let dry completely.
Tips
Use different paper patterns for varied looks. For a graduated set, cut strips of increasing length. Roll slowly to avoid wrinkles.
Caution
If using a craft knife, work on a cutting mat and keep fingers clear of the blade.
