What You'll Need

  • Old CD case (jewel case)
  • Felt in two colors (e.g., green for board, black and white for pieces)
  • Fabric marker or pen
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue or hot glue gun
  • Rubbing alcohol (optional, for sticker residue)
  • Straight edge
  • Craft knife (optional)

Repurpose an old CD case into a compact Othello/Reversi game. The case serves as the board and storage for pieces.

1

Step 1: Prepare the CD Case

Open the CD case and remove any paper inserts, booklets, or the plastic tray holding the CD. Ensure the case is flat and clean. If there is sticker residue, use rubbing alcohol to remove it and let it dry completely.

2

Step 2: Make the 8x8 Board Grid

Measure the inside dimensions of one half of the CD case. Cut a piece of felt (e.g., green) to fit that area. Using a ruler and fabric marker, draw an 8x8 grid of equal squares on the felt. Use a straight edge for clean lines. If the felt is dark, use a white or silver marker.

3

Step 3: Create 64 Two-Sided Game Pieces

Cut 64 small circles from the black and white felt. Each piece should have one black side and one white side. Glue the black and white circles together back-to-back. Alternatively, use flattened bottle caps or small pebbles painted on both sides.

Step 4: Assemble the Game

Glue the felt board grid onto the inside of one half of the CD case. Let it dry. Store the 64 pieces inside the case. Close the case to keep everything together for travel.

Tip

For stubborn sticker residue, use rubbing alcohol or adhesive remover. Ensure the case is completely dry before proceeding.

Tip

To ensure straight grid lines, press down firmly with a straight edge. For dark felt, use a white or silver fabric marker.

Tip

For eco-friendly pieces, use flattened bottle caps or small smooth pebbles painted on both sides. Ensure they fit inside the case.

Warning

Use scissors or craft knife carefully when cutting felt and pieces. Keep away from children.
